A loss to our school community

A loss to our school community

April 29, 2021

Dear Washingtonville Community,

Today, our school community was very saddened to learn of the death of Ms. Kelly Cossano after a short illness. We are all shocked by the loss of our beloved middle school art teacher of 26 years. Also the adviser of the middle school yearbook, Ms. Cossano was a passionate, dedicated and caring teacher who always looked out for her students and touched the lives of many during her tenure at the middle school. An active member of our school community, her loss will be felt by individuals and families across Washingtonville.

Our faculty and staff have been informed of this tragic news, and the WCSD crisis team has made preparations to help students and staff. School counselors and psychologists will be available throughout the district in the days and weeks ahead, to offer support as needed. This counseling is open to all students, including those that are in the virtual instructional model.

Children express grief in different ways. Some may be very upset, while others may exhibit seemingly inappropriate responses. Even if your child has not had direct ties to Ms. Cossano, they still may be very upset by this event. Please encourage your child(ren) to express their feelings. If you have any concerns about your child's response to the loss of Ms. Cossano or need additional support, please contact your child’s school counselor at (845) 497-4000.

Ms. Cossano will be greatly missed. Please keep her family and friends in your thoughts and prayers.

Sincerely,

Dr. Larry Washington
Superintendent of Schools
