First Board of Education Making a Difference award recipients announced

First Board of Education Making a Difference award recipients announced

The Board of Education announced the recipients of the first-ever Making A Difference Awards. Six standout community members are making a difference in the lives of Washingtonville children every day. Please join us in congratulating:

  • Lori Brennan, kindergarten teacher at Round Hill
  • Patty Brooks, secretary at Little Britain
  • Dina Martirano, fifth grade teacher at Round Hill
  • Patty Mynio, bus driver at Taft
  • Todd Rose, middle school gym teacher and varsity boys basketball coach
  • Deb Zupko, second grade teacher at Little Britain

“I am truly humbled and honored to receive this award,” said Ms. Brennan. “The meaning behind this award is what touches me deeply - making a difference. I went into teaching 26 years ago to do just that.”

“The Starfish Story” was the inspiration for the award. In the story a young boy is questioned as to why he is throwing starfish back into the water when there are so many on the beach. The man who approached him, said there was no way he could make a difference. As he threw the starfish into the water, he states, "I made a difference to that one."

“The story illustrates that any one person can make a difference for another person,” said Sharon Williams, board of education president. “Everyone who is making a difference deserves to be honored and recognized and we on the Board have been inspired by their stories.”

“As a teacher the most important thing to me is forming connections and relationships with my students, with the hope that I am making a difference in their lives,” said Ms. Martirano. “It is an honor to be nominated and recognized for that.”
