Elementary students and their families made their way to Hannaford Supermarkets in New Windsor Tuesday and Wednesday night for a fun adventure full of math. The second night drew a crowd of over 100 community members, with the line flooding out the door.
During this event, participants had the opportunity to explore interactive stations to solve real world math problems while browning the aisles. Some of the activities included a cup stacking challenge, creating 2D and 3D shapes with marshmallows and toothpicks, totaling groceries on the cash registers and exploring different cultural foods and comparing their costs.
"Our elementary students aren't just learning math—they're living it! Math Night at Hannaford turns everyday moments into hands-on learning, showing that numbers are everywhere, from price tags to measurements," said Principal of Little Britain Dr. Christopher Barrie."We are grateful to Hannaford for partnering with us to turn learning into an adventure! Together, we’re showing students that math is everywhere—making real-world connections, one fun moment at a time."
Hannaford Supermarkets gifted each student a ten dollar gift card. Students also had the chance to win an exciting prize, being the principal for the day at their school. Once they completed the challenges and filled out a bingo card, students were then drawn into a pool for a name to be picked.
The winners from the bingo include Anthony Smith from Little Britain, Avery Figueroa from Taft, and Ryder Stinson from Round Hill. Alexandra Arduino’s third grade class also won an ice cream party for having the most attendance at the event.
“My boys had an amazing time! It opened a conversation about real life math skills in house foundations, architecture and the pyramids in Egypt,” said Lainie Bertin, a parent in the WCSD. “My son really enjoyed the scavenger hunt and seeing friends outside of school. What a way to bring the school community together!”
