Mason Ketcham, a senior at Washingtonville High School, made history on the mat, becoming the first wrestler in over 30 years to become the New York State champion in the district. Mason’s 13-year career of hard work and dedication all led up to this victorious moment.
Mason's father, a former high school wrestler himself, encouraged him to join the Washingtonville Youth Wrestling Program. Mason decided to give it a try and instantly fell in love with the sport.
Mason was a part of the Washingtonville High School wrestling team in seventh grade, as well as his junior and senior year. Last year, Mason placed second in the state championship, motivating him to work diligently on his skills to take home the title.
“It taught me that they’re not just going to give it to me (the title), I have to actually work for it and earn it,” said Mason when asked about how placing running up last year motivated him this year. “It taught me to be disciplined the whole time, I can’t just slack off anymore.”
Mason saw a massive improvement in his wrestling skills over the past year, working with a new training club and training with the best coaches in the area. Mason’s father has also been helping Mason improve his craft by reviewing film of his son’s opponents to learn their signature moves and help Mason in matches. He also analyzes Mason’s craft and gives pointers on how he can continue to get better.
In the fall, Mason will be attending the University at Buffalo for Division I wrestling, where he hopes to continue to excel in wrestling. Congratulations Mason and best of luck on all your future endeavors!
