Nov. 9 middle school COVID-19 update from Superintendent Dr. Larry Washington

Nov. 9 middle school COVID-19 update from Superintendent Dr. Larry Washington

Dear Middle School Parents/Guardians:

This morning, Nov. 9, 2020, we learned that two students tested positive for COVID-19 at Washingtonville Middle School. In following Orange County Department of Health protocol, faculty and staff in direct or proximate contact with the positive cases were sent home today to quarantine for 14 days. These additional cases continue to be a result of students that were involved in multiple social and athletic events the weekend of October 31/November 1, where there were additional opportunities for exposure.

While this information has not yet been confirmed to us by the Orange County Department of Health (DOH), we are being proactive and immediately initiating quarantine requirements for all students we believe had contact with the infected students. District administrators are in the process of contacting students, parents and any additional staff who are required to quarantine.

We believe operating the Middle School now requires an even greater abundance of caution, given the increasing positivity rates we are seeing within our area. Because of this, we are shifting to remote instruction for all Middle school students beginning tomorrow, Nov. 10 through Wednesday, Nov. 18. Please note that on Wednesday, Nov. 11 schools will be closed in observance of Veteran’s Day.

While learning remotely, students will log into their Google Classroom.  Classes will be live streamed via a Google Meet with their classroom teacher following their regularly scheduled classes for a 40 minute period. Students will continue to follow the alternating blue/gold day rotation schedule and need to report to their classes on a daily basis, Monday-Friday. Please refer to the Middle School period schedule and blue/gold day rotation which is attached for your convenience. Attendance will be taken each period. Students will have lunch at their designated times. Students enrolled in a study hall are to use that period for the completion of iReady assignments or to complete other classwork independently.

Tomorrow, Nov. 10, all meal orders normally picked up at the Middle School will be available for pick up at the HS front entrance. Beginning on Nov. 13 - November 18, meals for middle school students can be picked up at the MS side entrance. Please be sure to place your meal orders each day by 11:00 pm.

Please know that when in our building, all students and staff are required to comply with CDC guidelines, including mask and social distancing mandates. To help mitigate the spread we need your help, and our expectation is that students and families follow all COVID-19 protocols while not in school. The safety and well-being of our students, staff and community is always our first and top priority.

Please call the middle school health office at 845-497-4000, extension 24534 if you have any further questions. Thank you for your continued support, patience and cooperation.

Sincerely,

Dr. Larry Washington, Superintendent of Schools and Ms. Teresa Thompson, Principal, Washingtonville Middle School
