Wizards Lacrosse Camp builds skills, confidence and community

Wizards Lacrosse Camp builds skills, confidence and community

Wizards Lacrosse Camp wrapped up last week after welcoming 35 enthusiastic campers in kindergarten through eighth grade for a fun week of learning and play.

Throughout the week, campers focused on developing fundamental stick skills, communication and teamwork, all while building confidence and a love for the game. Coaches kept things exciting with creative drills like ground ball musical chairs, a fun take on a classic game, where coaches throw balls onto the field and players must secure one each round or they’re out.

Boys and girls came together on the last day for a lacrosse-styled game of Sharks and Minnows, with players running across the field with the ball while dodging coaches wielding pool noodles instead of lacrosse sticks.

High school players served as mentors during the camp, helping create an encouraging environment for the younger athletes.

“Watching our varsity players lead with such heart has been the highlight of this camp,” Erin Mahar, girls lacrosse coach, said. “It’s a beautiful reminder of how powerful sports can be for building community.”

Now in its second year, the camp is led by Coach Mahar and Boys Modified Coach Josh Salisbury, who both look forward to continuing to grow a strong, supportive lacrosse community in Washingtonville.
