Athletic field construction kicks off at Washingtonville High School

Athletic field construction kicks off at Washingtonville High School

The Washingtonville Central School District celebrated the start of construction on a new multipurpose field and track at Washingtonville High School with a groundbreaking ceremony. This project, part of the 2024 Capital Project, was approved by voters in May 2024 and focuses on health and safety, infrastructure, and athletic improvements.

Attendees included Washingtonville Village Mayor Thomas DeVinko, Blooming Grove Town Supervisor Robert C. Jeroloman, school district administrators, Board of Education members and the board’s student representatives, senior Lila Sinacori and junior Giovanni Berchielli.

“This groundbreaking ceremony is a physical manifestation of the overwhelming support shown by our community,” said Superintendent Dr. Larry Washington. “Right here, we are building a new heart of our athletic program. We will look back on this day as a pivotal moment in our district’s history that was made possible by the commitment of the entire Washingtonville school community.”

The new synthetic turf field will accommodate football, soccer, and lacrosse, featuring alternate shading, blue and gold end zones, and a shock pad for safety. It will also have improved drainage. The expanded eight-lane track and upgraded events area will benefit track and field athletes. Additional enhancements include a new press box, scoreboard, fencing, and LED lighting. The project is expected to be finished in late spring 2026.

“On behalf of the Board of Education, we are thrilled to be breaking ground today,” said Board of Education Vice President Robin White. “Thank you to our district leadership for your diligence through every phase of this project, and to our design and construction partners for your creativity and skill. To our students, staff and families, thank you for your patience. And to our community, thank you for your continued support. Stay tuned – great things are happening in Wizard Nation.”

“It's super exciting to see that we're updating some of these facilities and really raising the bar at Washingtonville,” said Board of Education Student Representative Lila Sinacori. “I think it'll make future football games and track meets a lot more fun and hopefully we can have more people come and watch.”

Other athletic improvements under the Capital Project include drainage improvements, an upgraded access driveway to upper athletic fields, and enhancements to the baseball backstop, dugouts, and batting cages. Building and grounds improvements include roofing, door replacements, public address systems, courtyards, kitchen equipment, and playgrounds.

“Today is a day many of us have dreamed of, and it shows what we can achieve when we come together,” said Director of Physical Education, Health and Athletics Suzanne Lendzian. “This new field will be a hub of teamwork, mentorship and excellence and a place where we’ll celebrate victories, learn from losses and build lasting memories.”
