Bus Safety Tips: Maximize Visibility in the Dark

Bus Safety Tips: Maximize Visibility in the Dark

Since the clocks fall back in early November, commutes that used to be bright are suddenly dark. Check out safety tips to maximize visibility in the dark below:

  • Add Reflection: Attach reflective tape or blinking safety lights to dark winter coats and backpacks.
  • Use the "Flashlight Rule": Carry a small flashlight or use a phone light while waiting at the bus stop so the driver—and other motorists—can easily see your child from a distance.
  • Beware of Slick Leaves: Wet, fallen leaves on the ground can be as slippery as ice. Remind children to walk slowly to the bus stop and use the handrail when boarding to prevent slips.
  • Adjust for Winter Clothing: Bulky hoods, heavy scarves, and hats block a child's peripheral vision and muffled hearing. Teach them to physically turn their heads all the way left and right to check for cars before crossing.
  • Keep Straps Tucked: Long scarves, drawstrings on heavy jackets, and loose backpack straps can easily get caught in the school bus handrails or doors. Make sure everything is tucked in before stepping onto or off the bus.
