The Washingtonville Central School District tennis courts recently received a renovation that was completed just in time for preseason practice, which began on August 26th.
The repave resolved cracks, stains, uneven playing surfaces, standing puddles, and loose net poles that caused loose nets.
The tennis courts are not only used during school hours for physical education classes and the interscholastic tennis program but also for the greater community. The courts are open on weekends for public use.
“It feels good to have a fresh court and it looks a lot better now, for sure,” said Alexandra Davis, a sophomore at Washingtonville High School.
Not only does a new court make for great practices, but it also makes for great matches.
“We found out they were redoing the courts right before summer started and we were really excited,” said senior Anastasia Shaw. “I’m definitely looking forward to playing our first match.”
“Yeah, it’s a fresh start for all of us,” added Emily Newcomb, an eighth grader at Washingtonville Middle School. “It’s also my first year in varsity, so I’m really excited to play with all of the older girls.”
Girls Tennis Coach Matthew Anastasi also expressed his appreciation for the support given to the team with the updated courts.
“We have a lot of pride in our program,” said Coach Anastasi. “Having all of these support systems in place was really key in asking for new courts for our teams. The girls team, in particular, has won sections for the past couple of years, so it’s nice to match up the courts with how hard they practice.”
“The renovations to the tennis courts are a major upgrade for the entire Washingtonville tennis program and community,” said Suzanne Lendzian Director of Physical Education, Health & Athletics. “Resurfacing the courts provides a safe, even, non-cracked playing surface certified for home tennis competitions and practice. Updating the courts provides our student athletes an opportunity to showcase their talents in a safe facility we are all proud of and proud to play on.”
