Washingtonville esports players take top two spots at Wonder Games

The Washingtonville High School Wizards Esports team got an early start to its season with a strong showing at the Empire State Scholastic Esports Federation (ESSEF) event during the Wonderama Wonder Games in August.

Washingtonville players Chris “Jayke” Roman and Zack “SharkC” Elmardi took first and second place, respectively, in the event’s inaugural esports tournament located in Times Square. 

The trip also gave Washingtonville students an opportunity to meet players and coaches from scholastic esports programs across New York, including teams from Johnson City and Commack.

“It was certainly an interesting way to kick off the season and a memorable experience for the students who were able to attend,” Coach Kevin Calderin said. “It was great to see the kind of community that can develop around these events.”

Students also met the Quad Squad, who attended the event in support of AbleGamers, an organization focused on making gaming more accessible for people with disabilities.

“One of the things I appreciate most about esports is seeing the different ways games can bring people together, and that was certainly on display throughout the day,” Mr. Calderin said.

With the fall season now kicking off, the strong showing was a promising start for Wizards Esports. Go Wizards!
