Wizards Esports competes at NYS High School Esports Showcase

The Washingtonville High School Wizards Esports team put together a strong showing at the New York State High School Esports Showcase this past weekend, competing against some of the state’s top programs at MVP Arena in Albany.

The performance was an encouraging start for a program coming off a championship season after graduating some of its top players.

The Wizards competed in three popular esports titles – Super Smash Bros., Marvel Rivals and Rocket League. The event also featured college representatives and gave Washingtonville’s newly formed production crew an opportunity to meet and learn from esports broadcasting professionals, including members of CBS News.

In the individual Super Smash Bros. competition, Christopher “Jayke” Roman finished fourth overall, while Jadiel “Artful” Jimenez turned in his best individual performance yet with a fifth-place finish. Zack “SharkC” Elmardi led the way for Washingtonville, battling back through the tournament bracket to finish second overall.

Washingtonville was equally impressive in Marvel Rivals, a team-based competition in which players work together using different characters and roles. The Wizards went undefeated in match play, with strong performances across the roster.

Among the highlights was Rory “Quargle” Finnerty, who recorded 40 eliminations while playing as the Incredible Hulk and later followed with 42 eliminations as Doctor Strange. The Wizards continued their strong play throughout the tournament without dropping a match.

Beyond the competition, the showcase gave students a chance to connect with other high school esports programs, explore collegiate opportunities and get a closer look at the production side of competitive gaming.

With the season under way this week, the Wizards are in good spirits, ready to put in the work for another great season.
