No Hate Tour rolls into Washingtonville High School

Professional BMX riders brought high-flying tricks and a message of positivity to Washingtonville High School students on Tuesday morning as the No Hate Tour rolled into the gym.

As a team of BMX riders performed throughout the assembly, Zach Newman spoke to students about bullying, perseverance and pursuing the things they care about. Riders took to the ramps for aerial tricks while a BMX flatland rider demonstrated his skills on the gym floor.

Mr. Newman shared his own path into BMX and the years he spent working toward his goal of competing in the X Games. He recalled being made fun of when he first showed up at a skate park as a kid and encouraged students not to let others determine what they can accomplish.

“Just do not ever give up on yourself,” Mr. Newman told students.

The message also extended to how students treat others, particularly online. Mr. Newman reminded students that words shared through a phone or computer still reach another person and encouraged anyone experiencing bullying to turn to the adults around them for help.

There were also plenty of moments designed simply to get the crowd on its feet.

One of the biggest came when a BMX rider flew over Principal Robyn Boardman and Washingtonville High School teacher Kayla Pucci. Students also got in on the action with a planking competition to close out the assembly.

Assistant Principal Dan Wargo, who organized the assembly, said he hopes the message stays with students beyond Tuesday’s event.

“I hope students learned that there are multiple pathways to being successful,” Mr. Wargo said. “Follow your passions and surround yourself with people who care for you and help you become the best version of yourself.”
