Washingtonville celebrates track and field summer camp success

On Wednesday evening, friends, family and community members gathered at Washingtonville High School to cheer on 55 campers showcasing their skills at the final meet of the Wizards Track and Field Summer Camp.

Throughout July, students going into grades 3-6 came together every Wednesday to learn the fundamentals of track and field under the guidance of Coaches Michael White Sr. and Jr., William Quinn, Erin Wilson and Deborah Boerke. The campers got additional support from some members of the Wizards varsity track team.

Camp participants explored various track and field events, such as discus, javelin, hurdles and distance running, rotating through different stations during each session.

“This camp gives students an opportunity to see different events and discover something they're good at,” Coach White Sr. explained. “Seeing their excitement and the joy they experience when they find their event is what this camp is all about.”

Campers participated in discus, long jump, 100 meter hurdles and the 400 meter dash during the meet. The event concluded with a demonstration of the 4x100 relay race by high school coaches. Afterward, campers formed their own relay teams for an exciting finish.
