Washingtonville CSD welcomes new staff with two-day orientation

The Washingtonville Central School District welcomed new staff during its new teacher orientation on Tuesday. This two-day program included dozens of new employees, featuring eight newly added special education positions and several new teaching assistants throughout the district.

The event kicked off with breakfast and introductions, followed by small workshops and trainings. Teachers also had the chance to tour the district by bus and wrapped up the day with a fun scavenger hunt designed to help them get to know Washingtonville even better.

For many, joining Washingtonville is both a professional and personal milestone. Sarah Murray, a 2007 graduate of Washingtonville High School, is returning as a sixth grade science and social studies teacher.

“It’s exciting to be part of the Washingtonville community that helped shape me and to be able to give back,” she shared.

At Taft Elementary, Myra Perez and Lauren Toper will be co-teaching the third grade together for the first time.

“Washingtonville has been very highly recommended by everyone I know,” Ms. Perez said. “I’m really excited to be a part of this team.”

Superintendent Dr. Larry Washington closed out the morning of introductions with words of encouragement, emphasizing the importance of integrity, trust and honesty in education.

“When I hire you, my goal is for you to come to Washingtonville as yourself,” he told the new staff. “Culture doesn’t just exist – you are the people who help create it.”

With a growing staff and a strong sense of community, Washingtonville is ready to begin the 2025-26 school year with fresh energy and enthusiasm.
