A Wizard's Path: Edward Breslin

A Wizard's Path: Edward Breslin

Senior Edward Breslin has had a melodic adventure throughout his educational journey in the Washingtonville Central School District. From joining choir in elementary school, to becoming a sensational section leader in the high school Chamber Singers, Edward has grown exceptionally as an individual and artist.

Edward began his musical career when he joined Taft Elementary’s chorus in second grade, and has been singing ever since he learned how to talk. He credits his mother and his elementary music teacher for encouraging him to pursue his passion from an early age.

In fifth grade, Edward had his first opportunity to try out for the All-County Music Festival, an annual festival that brings together the best student musicians from across Orange County. Since then, he has auditioned and participated every year.

In regards to Edward’s musical experience in middle school, he dearly appreciates the connection he created with his music teacher, Ms. Hannah, who continued to encourage his love for singing. Edward and his classmates even had the chance to perform at the “Music in the Parks” competition at Dorney Park, where they took home first place.

Edward auditioned and joined the high school’s Chamber Singers sophomore year, and became a section leader his junior year. The role has given Edward the chance to help himself and his peers grow as musicians.

As a section leader, Edward assists in teaching his classmates how to read music and site read. Additionally, it is his responsibility to make sure that the group stays on task and are equipped for their performances.

“I love to see them improve,” Edward said. “I love hearing where they first start from, and then hearing where they get to. It’s just so fulfilling and rewarding, it’s so fun. It’s also satisfying; all of your work paid off to have this beautiful piece.”

Edward’s trajectory in the arts continued throughout high school, taking advantage of the many opportunities the school provided, including BGTV and Masque and Mime club. Edward has also taken several art courses such as drawing, sculpture, photography and film. These courses have helped Edward combine his passions with his post secondary education pathway in marketing.

“Photography is something I’m really passionate about,” Edward said. “That’s why I’m going towards marketing, so I can kind of include that in what I do.”

In the fall, Edward will be attending SUNY Orange with a major in marketing. He has already started to pursue his creative passions outside of school by curating commercials for local businesses. It started by helping his brother-in-law’s landscaping company with photography and videography, and has expanded from there.

“I’ve been practicing all last year and learning how to use the software,” he said. “I wouldn’t be able to do this (freelance) without the tools that I’ve been provided from the school, like Final Cut and Photoshop.”

One of the biggest takeaways Edward has had throughout his time in Washingtonville is the friendships he has made, as well as the teachers who inspired him and helped shape him into the person he is today.

With graduation less than a month away, some words of wisdom Edward advises is, “To not be afraid to be yourself, and speak up when you feel like your voice needs to be heard.”
