Max Mobray is an all-star on and off the field; a hard working student who will be attending Harvard in the fall and a dynamic defender for the Washingtonville Varsity Soccer team. Max has an impressive talent that has led him to earn a spot on Bermuda’s national soccer team. Here, Max will play in the preliminary games to qualify for the Gold Cup, and potentially the World Cup.
Max has trained rigorously over the years to secure a place playing for Bermuda, his father’s native country. Over the years, Max has performed in tournaments and training with elite club teams such as the New York Red Bulls and TSF Academy.
In December, Max flew down to Bermuda to participate in an ID camp, where athletes showcase their skills for a chance to be recruited. Max was chosen to play in the U-20 Concacaf Championship, which is an international soccer tournament for men under-20 organized by the Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football. Now, he has the opportunity to play with the senior team due to his outstanding performance.
“It’s definitely monumental for my own career as a soccer player,” Max said when asked how it feels to play with the senior team. “Having this opportunity means a lot to my family and me. It marks a lot of the sacrifices that I’ve made to make it to this; it’s nice to finally accomplish it. Going from a kid watching the World Cup, to having the opportunity to actually play in it, it’s really big for my family and me.”
Max’s biggest inspiration throughout his career has been his own journey. About eight years ago, he grew ill and stayed in the hospital for over a month. During this time, he was told by doctors that he might not be able to play soccer again. Max did not let this deter him. In fact, he uses that experience as inspiration and motivation to be the best player he can be.
In his senior year, Max decided to join the Washingtonville Varsity Soccer team instead of playing club soccer. This experience allowed him the chance to play with his friends from school, something he hasn’t been able to do because he is usually contracted with a club team during the season.
“That was an amazing experience,” said Max when asked about playing for Washingtonville. “It's probably the most fun that my brother and I have had playing soccer. We wanted to play with our friends and make it far.” The team made it all the way to section finals for the first time in over 10 years.
He is also extremely determined to stay on top of his academics while balancing his soccer career. Max works with a tutor to ensure he doesn’t miss any work while traveling to stay on top of his grades. In the fall, Max will be attending Harvard University to study economics to be an investment banker.
