WCSD alumnus gives WMS students an inside look at aerospace engineering

For sixth and seventh grade students in Raquel Reyes' technology classes, one memorable lesson this year came from someone who once walked the same halls. Class of 2019 graduate Louis Reyes returned to Washingtonville Middle School to share how the foundation he built as a Wizard helped launch a career in aerospace engineering.

After graduating from SUNY New Paltz with a degree in mechanical engineering, Mr. Reyes began a career in engineering and currently works at Chromalloy, where he helps repair aerospace components used in jet engines.

During his visit, Mr. Reyes explained how engineers use math, science and creativity to solve problems. He shared his educational journey from Washingtonville to SUNY New Paltz, where he conducted research, led the American Society of Mechanical Engineers student chapter and completed engineering design projects.

Students also learned about his current work repairing turbine blades and vanes, overcoming challenges such as extreme heat and corrosion inside jet engines and using automation and robotics to improve manufacturing processes. Throughout the presentation, he encouraged students to think of engineering as a field centered on innovation, teamwork and problem-solving.

"It felt fantastic to be back in Washingtonville. It was very nostalgic with some very great memories," Mr. Reyes said. "The time in the district helped set the foundation for my education and bring me to where I am now. Washingtonville always had an intense focus on quality education and I am grateful I was able to experience it."
