Round Hill fifth graders are moving up to middle school

Fifth graders at Round Hill are moving on up to middle school! Students eagerly walked across the stage at Washingtonville High School Monday afternoon to receive their certificates and celebrate with family and friends. Check out photos from the ceremony here! 

The ceremony began with the Pledge of Allegiance and the presentation of colors from the Washingtonville High School JROTC before Principal Kristin Shaw gave her opening remarks.

“It is a blessing to have the opportunity to reflect upon this special time together as a community that has worked so hard to support our student success,” Ms. Shaw said. “One of the themes I discuss often with this year's fifth grade students is the idea of legacy and the importance of leaving a place and the people there behind better than when we first arrived.”

Student Council President Carly Mae Corbett stood at the podium to address her peers, discussing their academic accomplishments and personal achievements throughout their time at Round Hill. She highlighted her time in Odyssey of the Mind, and how the team placed eighth at the world championships, an outstanding accomplishment to be immensely proud of.

“One of my favorite memories this year was being on Round Hill’s Odyssey of the Mind team, the first to make it to the World Finals in about 15 years,” Carly said. “I'll never forget our name being called for first at regionals and then states, then finding out we placed eighth at World at Iowa State University.”

Several awards were presented to students throughout the ceremony, including the Golden Paintbrush Award, Josephine Giacco Award, Physical Education Award, Triple C Award, State Comptroller Award, Civic Ambassador Award, Heart of Gold Award, Principal’s Citizenship Award and Round Hill Citizenship Award.

Students walked across the stage one by one to receive their diplomas before hearing closing remarks from Assistant Principal Dr. Farid Johnson. The ceremony concluded with students performing “Best Day of my Life” by American Authors before they reunited with their families to continue celebrating their successful accomplishment.
