Round Hill celebrates America’s 250th Birthday through music and learning

Last week, Round Hill Elementary School students spent the week celebrating America’s upcoming 250th birthday through music, classroom activities and lessons centered around community, democracy and the future.

One of the week’s highlights came Thursday, when kindergarten students performed patriotic songs for other grade levels throughout the building. Led by music teacher Alex Garcia, students sang “This Land is Your Land,” “You’re a Grand Old Flag” and “Yankee Doodle,” sharing the celebration with classmates across the school.

Throughout the week, students explored a variety of ways to celebrate and learn about America, including important concepts like democracy, diversity, freedom and equality.

In classrooms across the school, students enjoyed crafts, engaging social studies lessons and activities that encouraged them to reflect on their hopes and dreams for the future. Students learned about past presidents, discussed the importance of the Pledge of Allegiance and explored the concept of advocacy by learning about important activists, discussing issues they care about and thinking of ways they can get involved and help create positive change in the future.

Democracy was also brought into the classroom through snack mock elections, while other lessons focused on American symbolism, including the history of the American flag and the Statue of Liberty. Reflective writing activities encouraged students to think about what freedom means to them and consider their rights as Americans.

The celebration concluded with a parade on Friday highlighting the many cultures and backgrounds represented throughout the Round Hill community!
