Washingtonville educators and community leaders earn regional recognition

Washingtonville Central School District community members and staff were recognized by the Mid-Hudson School Study Council this week, earning Awards for Excellence in recognition of their service, leadership and impact on students and families across the district.

Little Britain Elementary School PTO President Alison McKinney received the Community Service Award, Little Britain Elementary School fourth grade teacher Nicole Oliveira received the Teacher Excellence Award, and Washingtonville Board of Education Vice President Robin White received the Award for Excellence in School Board Service.

Together, the honorees represent different parts of the Washingtonville school community, from classroom instruction and family engagement to district leadership and advocacy.

As PTO President at Little Britain Elementary School, Alison McKinney was recognized for her volunteer leadership and efforts to strengthen connections between families, staff and students throughout the school community.

Ms. McKinney has served in PTO leadership roles for the past five years, first as vice president and now as president. Nomination letters described her as a welcoming and dependable presence who consistently works behind the scenes to organize events, support families and create opportunities for students.

Under her leadership, the PTO expanded accessibility for working families by introducing evening virtual meetings, helping increase participation within the school community. She also played a key role in helping the organization achieve 501(c)(3) nonprofit status.

Ms. McKinney has helped coordinate a wide range of school events and initiatives, including the Welcome Back Carnival, Veterans Day Breakfast, Teacher Appreciation Week, book fairs and the Birthday Book Program. Beyond Little Britain, she has remained active throughout the broader Washingtonville community through Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts and volunteer work supporting multiple PTO organizations across the district.

Nicole Oliveira was recognized for her dedication to students, leadership within the school community and commitment to creating meaningful learning experiences both in and beyond the classroom.

Ms. Oliveira, who has taught at Little Britain Elementary School since 2018, was praised by fellow community members for the strong relationships she builds with students and her ability to create a classroom environment where students feel supported, engaged and encouraged to grow as learners.

Letters submitted on her behalf highlighted her thoughtful instructional approach and commitment to meeting the needs of all students. Colleagues also recognized her for fostering a classroom culture rooted in respect, responsibility and collaboration.

Outside the classroom, Ms. Oliveira serves as an advisor for several student activities and enrichment opportunities, including Odyssey of the Mind, Yearbook Club, Homework Club and the Little Britain Ambassadors program. She was also recognized for mentoring newer teachers and supporting schoolwide initiatives aimed at strengthening school culture and student experiences.

Board of Education Vice President Robin White received the Award for Excellence in School Board Service in recognition of nearly a decade of leadership and advocacy on behalf of Washingtonville students, staff and families.

Ms. White has served on the Washingtonville Board of Education for nine years, including multiple years as vice president. Throughout her tenure, she has served on several district committees, including facilities, wellness, audit and policy committees, while also representing Washingtonville at both the Orange County School Boards Association and New York State School Boards Association levels.

Nomination letters described Ms. White as a thoughtful and student-focused leader who approaches decision-making with both long-term planning and a strong understanding of the needs of students and staff. Her support for wellness initiatives, school facilities and district advocacy was consistently cited as part of her impact on the district community.

Colleagues and district leaders also described Ms. White as approachable, collaborative and deeply invested in the Washingtonville community, emphasizing her commitment to public education and continued support for students and families across the district.

Across classrooms, school events, PTO programs and Board of Education meetings, each honoree was recognized for helping strengthen the Washingtonville school community through service, leadership and a shared commitment to students.
