WMS students explore local history during cemetery visit

Washingtonville Middle School eighth graders recently stepped outside the classroom and into local history during a guided visit to Washingtonville Cemetery as part of the district’s celebration of America’s upcoming 250th birthday last week.

The experience was organized in partnership with members of the Washingtonville Cemetery committee, who introduced students to Revolutionary War veterans and other historical figures buried within the cemetery. Students explored the grounds in small groups, learning about local connections to major moments in American history while completing activities focused on observation, research and historical analysis.

Prior to the visit, committee members visited the middle school to provide background information and help prepare students for the experience. During the trip, students used worksheets to document gravestone details, symbols, epitaphs and family connections while drawing conclusions about the lives of those buried there.

The Washingtonville Middle School Social Studies Department hopes to continue the visit as a new tradition in the years to come. Thank you to the Washingtonville Cemetery committee for helping bring local history to life and creating an engaging experience for students!
