Important Update: Personal Device Use in Schools

As part of the 2024–2025 New York State Budget, Education Law §2803 was amended to restrict student use of internet-enabled personal electronic devices, including phones, tablets, and smartwatches, during the school day. These changes go into effect for the upcoming 2025-2026 school.

Washingtonville CSD’s updated policy aligns with the law’s requirements and aims to ensure a safe, focused learning environment for all students. Highlights include:

  • Elementary students: Devices are prohibited and must be left at home.

  • Middle and high school students: Devices must be turned off and put away upon entering the school until the end of the day.

  • Exceptions are permitted for medical, disability-related, or educational purposes as outlined in the policy.
